About This Blog

Welcome to the Pints Bristol blog. This blog was set up to cover all things to do with the pub scene in and around Bristol when, candidly I was unemployed with nothing better to do.

Pubs are the most quintessentially British piece of our heritage we have. The history of the public house is inextricably linked with the history of Britain. Everything from the feudal system, Tithing, the creation of the Clifton Suspension Bridge and the abolition of slavery have all been discussed and debated in Bristol’s pubs. Pubs were there before Bristol City and Bristol Rovers; pubs were there when the SS Great Britain first sailed OUT of Bristol; when John Cabot left Bristol in the Matthew, there were pubs open in Bristol.

But pubs are under threat now, due to well-meaning but ultimately flawed Government legislation, due to the rampant greed of property developers, due to the short-sightedness of our local planning authorities, due to the need of people to have a Tesco Express within thirteen feet of their front door, and due to utterly ill-meaning AND flawed tax legislation. Plus, there’s a woman called Letitia who lives in Keynsham who looked very shifty when I mentioned the subject, so I’m pretty sure she has something to do with it too.

So here on these pages we will stick up for the British, and particularly Bristol, pub. We’ll review pubs, pass on pub news, look at the history of pubs, tackle issues that are debated in pubs. Basically, if you imagine you are a wheezy Labrador, and this blog is a pub, then we will put a bowl of water on the floor for you, open a pack of mini-Cheddars and find a mad old woman to rub your back so your leg does that thing.

If you have any news or views you think we should feature, just email us at pints underscore Bristol at yahoo dot co dot uk or leave a comment on this website.

Cheers!
